A Nice Day For It

A Nice Day For It is a photographic exploration of everyday life in the seaside town of Scarborough. Through a series of candid street photographs, Emma Warley documents the small and often overlooked moments that make up a day by the sea. Families on day trips, chance encounters on the beach, people pausing with chips or ice creams, and the quiet humour of British leisure culture all appear within the frame. Together, these scenes create a portrait of a place where ordinary life and holiday nostalgia coexist.

Working instinctively and close to the action, Emma captures the humour, warmth and occasional strangeness of public life. Her photographs focus on fleeting details that many people pass by without noticing, such as a glance, a gesture, or a moment of coincidence. The images encourage viewers to look more closely at everyday surroundings.

Scarborough has long been associated with pleasure, escape and the traditions of the British seaside holiday. In these photographs, those familiar rituals remain, viewed through a contemporary lens. The work celebrates the character of the town while observing the ways people move through and share public space.

Taken together, the photographs present Scarborough as lively, unpredictable and full of human moments. A Nice Day For It offers both a personal view of a familiar place and a reflection on the everyday theatre of life by the sea.

Emma’s exhibition is part of Scarborough Art, a programme within Scarborough Fair. Click the links to find out more and see what else is happening throughout the summer in Scarborough.
